The water supply is syphoned from any container by means of a thin hose and is emitted slowly through the ceramic cone. I tested these before I left for vacation. They did not seem to work at all. I was using them on outside pots and unless I was doing something wrong no water came out of them from the water bowl

These probes work great. However, don't expect great results in larger size pots. I think one probe covers a 10 inch pot pretty well.

I had to go on a trip for about 2 weeks and thought of asking somebody to water the plants for me but being away for 2 weeks it's a big burden for anybody to do so. So I did some research for alternatives.

We just returned from a 10-day vacation, leaving 7 plants and containers to the care of 10 spikes. Not only did all plants (indoors and out) survive during warm July weather, several showed better growth than with hand watering. The process to "start" and install the spikes is clearly described, and it's comforting to know that the spikes can be rehabilitated after extended use. We have left most in place as a convenience. These 5 watering probes have eliminated a lot of work for me. I have large vases sitting next to my flowers which I fill with water every few days, and I don't have to worry about forgetting my plants or overwatering them.
